However, AMS adoption remains challenging due to its <strong>significant upfront investment costs<\/strong>.<\/h2><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image aligncenter uagb-block-891fb08e wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-center\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/drlouis.us\/louis-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"1\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-6305da61\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">\u00abAMS may reduce the reliance on labor, which is a significant cost for dairy farms in major dairy states, trading off a variable cost with a fixed cost (e.g., investment).\u00bb<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image aligncenter uagb-block-c097c7d1 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-center\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/drlouis.us\/louis-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"1\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-b26b59e7\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">The study also examined the labor structures of dairy operations in <strong>California<\/strong> and <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong>, evaluating the practical benefits, financial challenges, and farmer perspectives on integrating automation into farm management.<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-5ef57a68\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Avian Flu Impacts on the U.S. Dairy Industry<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-96a3d143\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Delivered by <strong>postdoctoral scholar Dr. Luis F. Garcia-Covarrubias<\/strong>, this seminar addressed the impact of avian flu on dairy herds across the U.S., with California experiencing the highest number of recorded cases.<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-c2d71551\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Key discussion points included <strong>milk production disruptions<\/strong>, <strong>rising costs for farmers due to outbreaks<\/strong>, and <strong>trade restrictions.<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-68c72b43\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">While avian flu has a <strong>90% mortality rate in chickens<\/strong>, it only has an average <strong>2% mortality rate in cows<\/strong>. However, infected cows still need to be <strong>quarantined<\/strong>, significantly reducing<strong> milk production<\/strong>. Our <strong>exploratory financial analysis<\/strong> estimated that each infected cow costs farmers <strong>approximately $198<\/strong>, aligning with the <strong>$100\u2013$200<\/strong> range calculated by the <strong>American Association of Bovine Practitioners [2]<\/strong>. Given the <strong>economic burden on large-scale farms<\/strong>, prevention remains essential. We encourage farmers to <strong>continue testing and implementing biosecurity measures<\/strong> while further research unfolds.<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-38dc8fe6\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Sustainable Production in Dairy Farms<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-ea232351\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">This session, led by Research Fellow Dr. Karl-Friedrick Boy, examined the growing environmental challenges faced by dairy farms and the increasing influence of consumer preferences on sustainability<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-134fc6c2\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">We discussed how sustainable practices can help dairy farms reduce their carbon footprint and explored the key factors shaping sustainability adoption, including geographic location, climate perceptions, farmer demographics, and climate-smart technologies and practices<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-36ec3236\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong><strong>Engagement &amp; Acknowledgments<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-aos= \"fade\" data-aos-duration=\"400\" data-aos-delay=\"0\" data-aos-easing=\"ease\" data-aos-once=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-3daa7469\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Each session featured an engaged and thoughtful audience, including students, stakeholders, dairy industry experts, policymakers, and members of the public.
